Gromit

If you’re looking for a computer in the research room that will behave pretty much the same way every time it’s used, then look for Gromit! He’s the same ol’ dog we knew before but now we’ve taught him a few new tricks.
For starters, you’ll notice that Gromit has two user accounts: “Series” and “Steady.” Series is for administrative tasks, like installing new software and updates to Gromit. The average user won’t have access to this account. Steady is for day-to-day use, like word processing, presentation making and image editing.
Currently available through Gromit are: Windows XP, Office 2007, Firefox, Acrobat and support for English and Chinese input. Additional software will be added to Gromit as it becomes available.
This program is only in the test phase so any feedback and input that you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Simply add a comment to this post. Updates about Gromit and his future siblings will be added to this post.
In addition, for those with a natural affinity for computers and an interest in managing this and future Gromits {you’ll get access to the administrator account}, let it be known as well. One Gromit I can handle, many Gromits I cannot!
Love it!! When we have a complete list of necessary software I think all the computers should be gromitized~
Suggested additional software as must-haves:
- EndNote X1 (can be downloaded off the library…check the “resources” tab for a wonderful how-to)
- Adobe acrobat professional (so one can highlight PDF’s)
- Minitab (for quality management, and data manipulation in general)
- Visio (for beautiful flow-charts)
- An add-on for MS word if it’s not there already - save as pdf function
That’s all I can think of at the moment.
And as an FYI: If anyone’s having difficulty getting used to Word 2007, there’s a “map” workbook on the resources page of this site as well.
Mystery is solved now… I’ve been wondering about the puppy picture in the research room for a long time….
Gromit’s cool!
Btw, some people in the office work for computer maintenance for IIMBA, so if you need a team to groom Gromit and future siblings, maybe talking to the office would help.
Anyone knows where to get adobe acrobat professional 8?
about professional 8 - the office should have it i’d think, since they put it on all the computers in the lab. don’t know about licencing issues and whatnot though.
it would be great if they could make it available to all us students, like they do Office and EndNote (the school does that is).
Another software request: winrar to zip and unzip files
should we be putting some basic qualitative and quantitative research softwares on as well? for qual i’d say xSite~~
